Library
The library supports the educational needs of girls and staff through the provision of a wide range of learning resources, including fiction and non-fiction books, journals, topic files, CD-ROMs and online reference subscriptions. There are several networked computers and a list of useful websites, arranged according to subject, available for girls accessing the internet.
Adjoining the main library is a separate junior library, comprising fiction and non-fiction books and a suite of networked computers. The junior library is available to the girls at all times for reading and research, as well as for small groups undertaking project work.
The resources are accessible at all times, including evenings and weekends, and a full-time chartered librarian is available to give guidance and assistance. Form I / Year 7 girls are taught library skills as part of their PSHE programme. Research and information retrieval skills to support their academic studies are reinforced in groups and on an individual basis throughout a girl's school career.
Girls are encouraged to develop the habit of reading and to value reading as a source of pleasure. A bookshop is held once a term whereby girls, under the guidance of the librarian and staff from the English department, select and build up their own collections.
The careers library is housed in the main library and girls are given guidance in how to make effective use of the various resources, such as university prospectuses and gap year information.
