History
Our main objective is to generate a life-long interest in and enjoyment of history and to develop each girl's critical understanding of past and contemporary societies.
Forms I - III / Years 7 - 9
History is taught as a separate, compulsory subject. The course is based on Key Stage 3 of the national curriculum, although we do not adhere to this rigidly. It begins with the Norman Conquest in 1066 and ends with the events of the Second World War.
GCSE
History is a very popular option at GCSE. We follow Edexcel's Modern World specification and study the following topics: America 1941-1980; Super-power Rivalry 1945-1990s; Russia c1910-1924; Conflict in Vietnam c1963-1975; The Suffragettes; and Popular Culture in the 1960s.
AS and A-level
At AS we follow the Edexcel course which consists of: Boom and Bust: Economy and Society in the USA 1917-1933; Italy and the Rise of Fascism 1918-1925; and Life in the Soviet Union 1928-1941.
Most girls opt to continue their study of history to A2 and this course covers the following topics: The Quest for Greatness: Fascist Italy 1924-1939; Representation and Democracy in Britain 1830-1931; and The Cold War.
Outings are organised to complement the work undertaken in the classrooms. Girls attend study days in London relevant to their courses. Every year we organise a study day for the GCSE/AS and A-level candidates. A chief examiner from Edexcel comes to the school and gives the girls additional information about examination techniques.
