GCSE Options and Exam Results

The Key Stage 4 core curriculum for Forms IV and V / Years 10 and 11 comprises English, mathematics and French or Spanish.
The study of science is also compulsory. In the light of national changes in the science curriculum from September 2006, we have worked extremely hard to incorporate maximum flexibility into the timetable, so that girls have the possibility of receiving two GCSE awards, entitled Core and Additional Science, or, for those who have a greater aptitude and/or interest in science, three awards will be available in biology, chemistry and physics.
All girls must follow a religious studies programme throughout Key Stage 4, as an integral part of the curriculum of a school which highly values its Christian tradition. Here again, flexibility is vital, as girls can opt for the short course, equivalent to half a GCSE, or the long course, which represents a full GCSE award.
Girls choose different numbers of options, depending on their decisions relating to the science and religious studies provision and to their ability. The optional GCSE subjects are:
• Art
• Business and Communications Systems
• Classical Civilisation
• Design and Technology: Textiles Technology
• Drama
• English Literature
• French
• Geography
• History
• Latin
• Music
• Spanish
• Physical Education
Most girls choose three additional subjects, although four can be accommodated. The timetable blocks are constructed around their choices. Our aim is to provide a 100% fit, wherever possible.
Final decisions relating to options are made after detailed consultation with subject specialists, tutors, Key Stage co-ordinators, the Deputy Head (Academic) and, of course, girls and staff consultation with parents.
