Drama
There is a major junior and a major senior production every year, as well as minor productions and a House drama competition. Everyone has the chance to perform. The girls also take part in the National Shakespeare Schools' Festival.
All girls throughout the school enjoy visits to the theatre.
Junior production
The junior production is open to all from Forms I to III / Years 7 to 9 and is carefully chosen to provide a range of roles and participation. In addition the play or musical chosen usually offers opportunities for dance and music to combine with drama to widen the range of opportunity for the juniors.
Senior production – Michaelmas term
The senior production is open to all from Form IV / Year 10 and above and is carefully chosen to provide a thought-provoking and interesting play. Consideration is also taken of the theatre studies and English A-level syllabi to enhance the girls' academic studies. All aspects of the technical work are undertaken by the girls.
House drama
This is an opportunity for students of all ages to work together to produce a short extract from a play of their choice to perform during the contest. It is also a test of organisational skills as well as the ability to meet deadlines.
LAMDA
Many girls take up the opportunity to prepare for individual LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) speech and drama examinations. The LAMDA extra provision is available to all girls who work in groups, pairs or singly. Girls follow the LAMDA syllabus, and examinations can be taken in acting, verse and prose, improvisation, mime, spoken English and public speaking from Grade 1 to Gold Medal. Extra drama is very popular, with the programme being delivered by a team of teachers.
LAMDA examination results are excellent with girls usually gaining a mixture of honours and distinctions at both grade and medal level.
The work is showcased at various times of the year, both in the intimate setting of the studio and the full showcase in the school hall. This provides extra performance opportunities for the girls and the chance to build confidence when performing.
