Board of Governors

Under the terms of the merger agreement between Heathfield and St Mary’s, Wantage, it has been agreed that the new Governing Council of Heathfield St Mary’s will initially have equal representation from the former Governors of each school.

Set out below are the representatives of each school, who will be on the Council as from 1 September 2006. Additional members will be appointed in the coming months.

 

Chairman

Tom Cross Brown MA (Oxon) MBA (Insead) retired after a career in the City mostly with Lazard Brothers. He holds various non-executive positions, including Chairman of Pearl Assurance plc. Tom is also a Trustee of the Cancer Care and Haemotology Fund at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

 

Vice Chairman

Surgeon Vice Admiral Sir Godfrey Milton-Thompson KBE MA MB (Cantab) FRCP DCH is a retired Consultant Physician. Between 1985 and 1990, he held the position of Medical Director General of the Navy, and between 1988-90 was Surgeon General, Defence Medical Services. Sir Godfrey was Hospitaller, the Order of St John 1991-95, Warden, St Katharine’s House, Wantage 1993-1998 and has had family connections with St Mary’s School since 1898.

 

Members

The Revd Jonathan Baker, MA MPhil (Oxon) was Curate of All Saints, Ascot and Vicar of Holy Trinity Reading before becoming Principal of Pusey House Oxford in 2003.  He is a Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford, and a governor of Quainton Hall Preparatory School.

 

Jonathan Davie FCA is a Heathfield St Mary's parent. He has spent his entire career in the financial services industry. He is presently Chairman of IG Group plc, a non-executive director of Credit Suisse(UK) Ltd, Chairman of First Avenue Partners LLP and a Trustee of Everychild.

 

Anthony Deal is a former Heathfield parent. He ran his own property consultancy between 1973 and 1991 and now runs his own property investment company. Anthony was Deputy Chairman of the Heathfield Fundraising Board for the Swimming Pool.

 

Robert Gregory is a former Heathfield parent. He was HR Director at 3i Group, Mirror Group Newspapers and Grants of St James and now runs his own consulting practice in London.

 

Caroline Slettengren BSc (Hons) is a Heathfield old girl and the current Chairman of the Heathfield School Fellowship. She is a corporate commercial solicitor who trained and worked at city law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner for 5 years. She is now Company Solicitor at Dairy Crest Group Plc.

 

Tessa Smith BA PGCE DipM is Headmistress of St John's Preparatory School, Sidmouth. Formerly Headmistress St Dunstan's Abbey School until its merger with Plymouth College, and earlier Deputy Headmistress (Marketing) of Lincoln Minster School.

 

Major General John Sutherell CB CBE BA (Durham) is a current Heathfield St Mary’s parent. He was commissioned to the Royal Anglian Regiment in 1968 and retired from the Army in 2002 (service included command of 8 Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland, Director UK Special Forces and Commandant of the Royal Military College of Science). He is currently General Secretary of The Officers’ Association and Colonel of The Royal Anglian Regiment.

 

Mrs Sally Tulk-Hart is a former Heathfield pupil and parent. She was Chairman of the Heathfield Council between 1999 and 2005, Chairman of the Heathfield Parents’ Association and Chairman of the Heathfield Fundraising Board for the Swimming Pool. She is a member of the Heathfield Fellowship Committee.

 

The Revd Canon Dr Philip Ursell BA (Wales) MA (Oxon) is a former Fellow, Director of Studies and Chaplain of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and was until 2003 Principal of Pusey House, Oxford.  He is the Warden of Ascot Priory.

 

Roland Wreford was Chairman of the Heathfield Council Finance Committee. He worked for Barclays Bank between 1960 and 1997. He was in the Territorial Army from 1962-1982 and retired with the rank of Colonel. He has held various posts in private industry since 1997.
