Art
Heathfield St Mary's offers a thriving art department, with courses in fine art, ceramics, history of art, photography, print making and textiles. Courses are well subscribed at all levels.
Forms I - III / Years 7 - 9
Girls are given a wide programme of work covering all the main areas of Art and Design, thus allowing them to make an informed choice for GCSE. Disciplines are introduced with the aim of developing individual creativity and encouraging independent learning. Schemes of work cover a wide variety of techniques, whilst cultural and historical links are constantly being developed by way of visits, visiting speakers, use of the internet, the library and video tapes.
GCSE and A-level
Girls studying any of these subjects need to have a keen interest and be enthusiastic about art. The aim of the courses is to provide a balanced yet broad programme at all levels. Girls are encouraged to develop their talent and creativity using many different media, from painting in oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, to creating sculpture and pottery as well as printing on fabric and paper using block printing methods, screen printing and mono-printing. They learn to develop and print black and white images and develop their ideas using digital imagery.
ICT and Art
We have six networked computers, two digital cameras, a card reader and three flatbed scanners with negative and positive scan options. All art and art history students have access to these facilities and girls are encouraged to use PhotoShop and digital imagery to support their studies.
